Define classical music
Originally, the word was borrowed from poetry and more specifically from architecture, which obviously takes us away from the musical universe. While the art of ancient Greece is described as classical, the Renaissance, to renew it, will qualify it as "classicism" in reference to the shape of Greek columns and temples. In music, the word "Classical" can only be applied in a relative sense, its strict meaning being inapplicable there. The “classic” does not describe a particular era related to a style, but a spiritual elevation that few masters have reached during their lifetime. Thus, the masses of Palestrina pass for classics in the same way as the operas of Mozart, although they are of foreign genres and of different styles.
The history of music qualifies the following three composers in particular as “classics”: Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, because their works are considered to be pinnacles of Western culture. However, there is no clear limit to the concept, because everything is based on a subjective assessment. While the Romantics Schubert and Schumann are generally considered the classics of Romanticism, Wagner is generally denied this qualifier.
The qualification of “classical music” comes from works that have acquired a value freed from any problem. In the eternal play between form and content, there must be room for balance. Works that have not come to the end of their quests, their desires, are not considered "classic". Similarly, works that tend towards the classical ideal, but opt for the classical only on the front, come under what will be called “classicism” in a pejorative sense.
